When it comes to cooking, what you use can make a huge difference. This does not just mean in terms of your ingredients but also in terms of cookware.

The type of cookware you use can affect not just your cooking experience but more importantly, the quality of your food and ultimately, your health as well. In this case, you should know that not all pots and pans are created equal.

Cookware does not need to be pricey to be good. What’s important is to make sure they are not toxic and do not make you sick. For instance, there’s a concern involving nonstick cookware being toxic to our health. This is because a lot of them contain a man-made chemical known as perfluorooctanoic acid, also known as PFOA or C8. Exposure to this chemical can lead to many health problems, such as child developmental delays, high cholesterol, neurotoxicity, thyroid issues, liver inflammation and a weakened immune system, allergies, and even cancer.

To avoid these health problems, many would suggest using non-toxic cookware such as cast iron, glass, or stainless steel. That doesn’t mean you should totally avoid using nonstick cookware though. If you are keen on purchasing nonstick cookware, you just need to make sure that it is made of non-toxic materials. Two of the most popular nonstick pans in the market these days are Gotham Steel and Red Copper pans, which their makers claim are both safe to use. Let’s explore their similarities and differences so that you can decide which one is the better option.

Main Difference Between Gotham Steel and Red Copper Pans

Gotham Steel pans and Red Copper pans are very similar to each other. In fact, there aren’t a lot of features that distinguish the two.

First, they are both aluminum cookware with ceramic non-stick surfaces that are nearly identical. Their non-stick properties are both effective. This allows you to cook without the use of oil or butter. You no longer need to worry that your food will get destroyed due to sticking to the pan. Plus, these pans are easy to clean.

However, like most non-stick pans, they have a fairly short lifespan. To extend their durability, both require similar care instructions such as seasoning them first before using them.

Both are scratch-resistant and dishwasher-safe. They are light, cheap, and have a fairly standard thermal conductivity. Plus, they both use materials that are free of PFOA, which means you don’t have to worry about toxic chemicals in your dishes.

Aside from having different manufacturers, Gotham Steel and Red Copper pans do vary in terms of price, color, and logo placement. Red Copper pans are cheaper than Gotham Steel pans. The cooking surface of Gotham Steel is also slightly smaller than Red Copper’s. However, the main difference lies in the materials used to make their non-stick surface.

Gotham Steel pans are made of titanium-infused ceramic coating while Red Copper pans are made of copper-infused ceramic coating. Due to its titanium material, Gotham Steel is better in terms of durability. However, their copper properties allow Red Copper pans to deliver well-cooked dishes because copper distributes heat more evenly.

Expert tip

Non-stick cookware has several benefits. Food burns less easily because it doesn't stick to the cookware. Fried or breaded food is less likely to break when cooked in them. They also allow you to avoid using butter or cooking oil which leads to a "healthier you" because you consume fewer calories. They’re less expensive than other traditional cooking materials too.

Red Copper Pans

Red Copper was a concept brought to life by well-known American chef and TV personality, Cathy Mitchell, who understood the challenges of cleaning up cookware after use. Her desire to provide consumers with a durable and efficient set of cookware that can be cleaned with minimal effort is what inspired her to come up with this brand’s premium line of pots and pans.

Red Copper pans, just like all the other products in their cookware range, use a combination of copper-infused ceramic that give them their non-stick properties. This is what makes all Red Copper pots and pans easier to clean. The promise is that ingredients will easily slide off the cookware, which means you will no longer have to go through the entire process of soaking and scrubbing to get everything off. Not having to use textured scrubs decrease the risk of damaging and scratching the pans.

Copper is also known for being superior in terms of conducting heat. Red Copper pans have the ability to distribute heat evenly throughout the entire surface, which helps you cook healthier meals faster. Due to its high-temperature capacity of up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, they can be used either as roasting pans, baking pans, and frying pans among others.

The aesthetics of Red Copper pans are also something to be valued. These products all have a beautiful copper finish which makes the cookware elegant enough to use as a serving dish or to put on display in your kitchen.

Are Red Copper Pans Safe?

When it comes to cookware, safety is always a big concern. After all, it is one of the things you use to prepare the food that you and your family ingest. Needless to say, there are types of cookware that are safe to use and those that are not.

Red Copper’s manufacturer in China, Zhejiang JMJ Houseware Co., Ltd, claims that the Red Copper pan is the safest cooking option. In fact, they also say that it is not just safe for you but for the environment as well.

However, some people still question the safety of this cookware. One of the biggest safety concerns regarding Red Copper pans pertains to its copper component. While there is no question as to the beauty and performance of copper cookware, you have to be wary about the potential dangers it could pose to your health.

Copper is a toxic heavy metal which, when it builds up in your body, can cause mental disturbances and chronic illnesses. It can dissolve into the food when heated, especially when acidic food is used. Therefore, it is unsafe to use unlined copper for cooking.

However, Red Copper pans a have a ceramic cooking layer which prevents the food from coming into direct contact with the copper. Ceramic is known for being the safest and most environmentally friendly component that never releases any toxic materials even at high temperature. The Red Copper pan’s cooking surface is also PTFE free, which means there’s no possibility of any toxic chemical mixing into your food.

Expert tip

To ensure that your Red Copper pan will cook reliably and consistently, you have to season it first before using it. Pre-wash the pan with water and dish soap with no scrubbing involved. Add oil to the pan and coat its entire surface, as well as the bottom and the sides. Heat the pan in the stove or oven. Wait for the oil to dry then wipe the excess oil.

Gotham Steel Pans

Gotham Steel is one of the most popular manufacturers of ceramic non-stick pans. Their popularity can be attributed to a lot of heavy TV advertising and marketing strategies.

The brand features a wide range of pots and pans in different sizes and shapes. They are said to be very versatile and can be used on the stove, in the oven, and in the broiler as well. They do not, however, work with induction cooktops. They are rustproof though and can be safely washed in the dishwasher.

The base of a Gotham Steel pan is made of aluminum, which conducts heat well and makes the product light and inexpensive. The handles are made from stainless steel, which helps contribute to both oven and dishwasher safety. Gotham Steel pans have a high-temperature tolerance and are oven safe up to about 500 degrees Fahrenheit. They contain absolutely no chemicals that release toxic fumes at normal cooking temperatures.

Like most ceramic pans, Gotham Steel pans are supposed to keep food from sticking on them. Better yet, they claim that their non-stick surface allows the food to slide right out of the pan after you’re done cooking it. Its surface is actually made with super strong titanium-infused ceramic. This Ti-Cerama non-stick surface is fused solidly with the aluminum base and provides long-term durability. Their claim is that it won’t chip off or flake off even after several years of use.

Gotham Steel pans are great for healthy cooking because they don’t require any prep work, such as using oils, butter, or sprays to prevent food from sticking.

Are Gotham Steel Pans Safe?

Like Red Copper pans, Gotham Steel pans are considered safe to use because they contain none of the chemicals that should be avoided such as PTFEs or PFOAs. Since Gotham Steel pans also feature a coated surface, there is no danger of toxic particles mixing in your food.

There have been some doubts raised though on the safety of Gotham Steel cookware mainly because pure titanium is not a healthy metal and must not be used for cooking. This issue was raised with the premise that excess aluminum is created in the body when the metal is absorbed by the food being cooked in a titanium-based cookware. However, Gotham Steel pans are made of aluminum and are only titanium-infused to make the product more durable and scratch-resistant. This combination does not react with the human body.

Another issue raised was the presence of Teflon coating on ceramic titanium cookware. Teflon cookware contains chemicals such as PFOA and is considered dangerous because when heated in high temperature, it can release fumes harmful to humans and lethal to pet birds. Gotham Steel cookware, however, doesn’t fall into this category because they are not made with any materials such as the ones used to make Teflon.

If you’re looking to decide between Gotham Steel pans and Red Copper pans and your main concern is safety, you can’t go wrong with either one. While there are some differences between them, they are more alike than different. Both are effective although their non-stick properties do have an expiration date.  With proper care though, it is possible to keep them working great for several years.
